Library adds additional digital resources and virtual events to ease isolation

In an attempt to help frazzled parents, bored kids and other stressed out customersofficials from the Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) today announced a series of special virtual programs and additional resources being offering over the next two weeks.

Starting Thursday, the library is offering the following programs/resources on its Facebook page (facebook.com/aacpl)

  • Daily live storytimes from trained staff at 10:30 am (for next two weeks, except Sundays)
  • Daily 30-minute concerts from the band SQRRL! at noon 
  • Miss Johanna’s STEM activity of the day at 1:15 pm
  • The Great Movies discussion club on Friday at 7 pm   (This week’s selection is Murder on the Orient Express)
  • Information on virtual author and celebrity guided storytelling, educational resources

“Our staff are eager to get back to serving the public during this time of national crisis. We invite everyone to tune in for some education, enrichment and inspiration,” said Library CEO Skip Auld. 

Library staff is increasing their already extensive digital collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, streaming movies, music and databases available on the library’s websiteLibrary officials expect to purchase $150,000 worth of new digital content over the next two weeks. 

Parents will be happy to discover the new TumbleMath resource. Young learners from kindergarten through fifth grade can learn a variety of math concepts using animated picture books online, then follow along with the included lesson plans or quizzes

Limits to some digital resources have also been eliminated including some content for adults on the Kanopy streaming serviceAdditionally, genealogists will enjoy having access to Ancestry.com Library Edition, normally only available in library branches.

The library is also breaking down barriers to customers who sign up for a library card online.  Starting today, customers who sign up for the virtual card will have 90 days to visit a branch to trade it in for a full-service physical card instead of the usual 60 days. Anyone who lives, works or owns property in Maryland is eligible for an Anne Arundel County Public Library card. 

Customers can stay updated on changes to library services through the library’s social media channels (FacebookTwitter and Instagramand on our website. No library fines and fees will be charged during the closure.
