Delegate Shaneka Henson sponsoring free webinar: Navigating the eviction process

To raise awareness about the looming eviction crisis, Action Annapolis a women-led political action group and Del. Shaneka Henson, D-Anne Arundel County, will host a virtual town hall, Navigating the Eviction Process: What Our Community Needs to Know, Tuesday, November 17, 2020, 6:00pm-7:30pm EST.

Action Annapolis founding member Phebe Duff said “evictions are a very real issue facing individuals and families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.” The Annapolis based political action group is hoping to attract renters and rental property owners to the town hall being hosted virtually next Tuesday and streamed on the group’s Facebook page and YouTube. Action Annapolis founding member Kathryn Dahl said about unpaid rent during the COVID-19 pandemic, “there are upstream effects on landlords who rely on rental payments to cover the mortgages on their rental properties.”

Action Annapolis wants renters to know there are actions they can take to forestall eviction, manage financial issues and navigate eviction court proceedings. The group’s virtual town hall will feature rental assistance resources, a primer on eviction court procedure, and a preview of legislation being proposed to impact rental housing and evictions. The virtual town hall will be moderated by Rev. Dr. Carletta Allen, Senior Pastor, Asbury United Methodist Church. Panelist include:

  • Delegate Shaneka HensonMaryland House of Delegates, D30A: Discussing existing and upcoming legislation impacting rental housing and evictions.
  • Kathleen HughesStaff Attorney with MD Legal Aid: An overview of eviction court proceedings. A tenant’s guide to prepare for and go through an eviction proceeding to get as effective an outcome as possible.
  • Lisa Sarro, General Counsel, Arundel Community Development Services, Inc.: How to prevent evictions by negotiating an agreement with your landlord/tenant. Overview of eviction prevention assistance for tenants whose household income is affected by COVID-19.
  • Cathyrn PaulResearch and Policy Analyst at CASA of MD, Immigration Advocacy and Assistance Organization: Navigating evictions and accessing rental assistance for immigrants. Know your legal rights.
