NOAA’s Ark coming to Annapolis Maritime Museum

| July 31, 2014, 04:34 PM | 0 Comments

image001The Annapolis Maritime Museum will showcase artifacts representing science, service and stewardship by NOAA and its  predecessor agencies –- from 19th century maps and charts to early scientific instruments that recall the agency’s proud heritage and legacy of service to the nation.

Treasures of NOAA’s Ark is a traveling exhibit that has been on display at several museums over the last 10 years, and was most recently  featured at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for  nine months.  This exhibit has already reached 3 million people and will be at the Museum through October 31..

The Treasures of NOAA’s Ark temporary exhibit at AMM highlights major themes including history, weather, navigation and fisheries, and the Chesapeake Bay. These are the same major services that NOAA provides to the public.

The exhibit also blends art and science with a display of local cartoonist Jim Toomey’s cartoon strip, “Sherman’s Lagoon.” Toomey’s strips offer readers entertainment with educational messages of ocean conservation. Toomey was awarded the Environmental Hero award by NOAA in 2000 and 2010.

Treasures began as part of the Preserve America Initiative that calls on Federal agencies to promote a greater shared knowledge about the nation’s past, strengthen regional identities and local pride, increase local participation in preserving the country’s cultural and natural heritage assets and support the economic vitality of our communities.
