This year’s 49th annual Severn Town Club’s Holly Ball will be held Friday, November 30th, 2012, at the Westin Annapolis, beginning with cocktails at 6pm, dinner at 7:30. The theme for this year’s event – “Merry Everything and Happy Always” will include a silent and live auction, boutique, dinner and dancing to “Oracle”, a six piece band well known in the Mid Atlantic area.

Elizabeth Kinney, Executive Director of Light House: A Homeless Prevention Support Center, has been named the Honorary Chairwoman. “We are so grateful to the Severn Town Club for selecting the Light House as this year’s recipient of the Holly Ball. These funds will greatly assist in providing much needed funding for programs that support the goal of self-sufficiency to individuals and families who seek shelter and services at the Light House.“

Severn Town Club originally began celebrating the holidays in 1963 with a members’ holiday party which they continued until around 1986, when Severn Town Club’s then president, Laura Mercanti, suggested the club make the event a fundraiser to benefit the hospital (now Anne Arundel Medical Center.) It became The Holly Ball and has continued to raise funds for deserving local community charities ever since.

According to Linda Saksa, President, The Severn Town Club, Inc., “in the past 10 years alone, we have donated just short of $400,000 to various local charities, using the proceeds from our annual Holly Balls. This is quite remarkable, as we are a small group of women who work very hard each year to make the Ball successful. Thanks to these women and to the wonderful support we receive from local businesses and individuals in our community, the Severn Town Club’s Holly Ball has become a much-anticipated annual Annapolis event which has benefitted many deserving local charities over the years.”

Over the past 48 years recipients have included the Hospice of the Chesapeake, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Neo-Natal Unit and Breast Center, Scholarships for Scholars, the Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank, and, most recently, Wellness House of Annapolis. The primary recipient of the 2012 Holly Ball proceeds will be Light House Shelter in Annapolis.

“ We chose Light House because of their excellent record of providing much needed services to our community. We were impressed with the programs they provide which not only give shelter to those in immediate need, but also give training and counseling to help prevent homelessness and to give those most in need a chance to turn their lives around. We also appreciate their willingness to support our efforts in making this event the best it can be”, explained Ms. Saksa.
