The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s (CBMM) Miles River waterfront will be the backdrop for a live performance of the Mana Saxophone Quartet on Wednesday, June 4. Beginning at 6pm at the Tolchester Beach Bandstand, the concert is free and open to the public, with a suggested $5 donation made at the door. Beer, wine, and other refreshments will be available for purchase, with the public invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the performance. Carry-on alcohol is prohibited.

The quartet is currently the National Music Festival’s resident chamber ensemble, where they recently performed Philip Glass’s Concerto for Saxophone Quartet with the festival orchestra. The National Music Festival at Washington College brings together world-class mentors and gifted apprentice musicians for two weeks each June, when these musicians present more than 35 concerts—ranging from solo recitals to large symphony orchestra performances with chorus—and 200 free open rehearsals. This year’s festival is scheduled for June 1-14, with details online at www.nationalmusic.us.

Hailed as “Saxophone Ambassadors” by Chamber Music Magazine, the Mana Quartet presents 21st-century repertoire and 20th-century tours de force masterworks on vintage instruments built to the 19th-century specifications of the saxophone’s inventor, Adolphe Sax.

Recently, the D’Addario performing ensemble became the first saxophone quartet to receive the Coleman International Chamber Ensemble Competition’s grand prize, which immediately launched them into the professional chamber music arena. Since then, the group has taken on a growing list of residencies at major music festivals, an increasing presence on the chamber circuit, and has been repeatedly featured on NPR’s Performance Today.

In the event of rain, the concert will move inside the museum’s Small Boat Shed. Donation proceeds from the June 4 concert benefit the children and adults served by CBMM’s educational, boat restoration, and exhibit programming.
