Annapolis Mayor Joshua J. Cohen announces that the Market House Grand Opening Ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 7, at 10 a.m. The newest iteration of the building had a soft opening on Friday, August 30, at 11 a.m.

“This weekend we begin a new chapter for the Market House,” Mayor Cohen said.  “We took the time to get the right mix of vendors and make the necessary improvements so that it will be successful not just for the next year but for the long term.

“The Market House has been an authentic Annapolis experience. All of us who grew up in Annapolis have fond memories of going to the Market House. Now, a new generation of locals and visitors alike will once again be able to make their own special memories.”

Amsterdam Falafelshop opened in the Market House on June 20.  The soft opening, from Friday, August 30th through September 7th, will allow the new merchants time to train staff and perfect service  prior to the Grand Opening.

There has been a Market House at City Dock since 1788. The land was given to the City in 1784 by Nicholas Carroll, Jacob Hurst, Charles Wallace, Joseph Williams, Thomas Harwood, John Davidson, James MacKubin and James Williams, all prominent businessmen.  Located in the heart of the Historic District where vessels have docked for centuries; the existing structure was built in 1858 and underwent a major renovation and restoration in 1972.

The City remains responsible for maintaining and repairing the exterior structure of the Market House, as well as operating and cleaning the restrooms which will be open to the public 24 hours a day.

Mayor Cohen is reportedly going to make good on his promise to walk the plank the following weekend!
