County police, officials participate in White House program on community policing

AACoPDShieldThis week Anne Arundel County Police Chief Tim Altomare, Schuh Administration officials, and community leaders from across the county joined Obama Senior Administration officials in a national conversation on police-community relations. 

“Engaging with the community is crucial to ensuring we keep people safe in any jurisdiction,” said Police Chief Tim Altomare. “It was important for our department to be part of this national dialogue.”

Joining Chief Altomare at the gathering were Nancy Schrum, Director of the Office of Constituent Services, Reverend Dr. Carletta Allen of Asbury United Methodist Church, and Rudwan Abu-rumman, President of the Anne Arundel County Muslim Council.

The July 23rd forum, sponsored by the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, included Obama Adminstration Officials such as: U.S. Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch, Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett, White House Counsel Neil Eggleston, White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Director Jerry Abramson, COPs Office Director Ron Davis, and many others. 

Also attending the forum were more than 100 local leaders from across the country including mayors, police chiefs, sheriffs, faith leaders, and local leaders.

This forum follows a national forum on July 10, hosted by the Police Executive Research Forum.  In that event, police and community leaders from all over the nation also met to discuss the issues. Chief Altomare was joined by Councilman Pete Smith for that forum.

Anne Arundel County Police department has several ongoing community outreach initiatives including: 

• Business Advisory Council

• Citizen Advisory Council

• Police District Community Police Relation Councils

• Citizen’s Police Academy

• Reserved Officer Program

“We encourage anyone who wants to become involved to take part in these community-oriented initiatives,” said Altomare.
