Annapolis and Owensville will play host to Maryland’s Senior Olympics croquet games in September. This will be the first time that croquet is being played as part of the statewide games.

This exciting three-day tournament, scheduled for September 27-29, will be held at Ginger Cove in Annapolis and in Owensville, home of the nationally recognized West River Wickets. Ginger Cove, Annapolis’ premier life-care retirement community, opened two new state-of-the art artificial turf lawns last spring. Many of its players are also members of the West River club.

Byron Lee, a resident of Ginger Cove, first introduced the idea of croquet to Maryland Senior Olympics executive director Edward Wroth last year and a committee was formed to coordinate the event.

“We are honored to be selected for this event which demonstrates what great strides the game of croquet has made in Anne Arundel County in the last eight years,” said West River Wickets president, Rodney Calver. “The club, formed in 2004, began in a backyard in Galesville. Today, players regularly compete in national and regional championships.”

Forty-eight players, 50 years or older, from the state of Maryland will take part in the tournament which will be the nine-wicket version of the game. The rules of the United States Croquet Association will be used and the games organized by tournament directors from the USCA. There will be an opening ceremony in Galesville the evening of September 26 and a closing ceremony at Ginger Cove shortly after noon on September 29.

Sponsors and partners are being sought to help underwrite the event. Contributors will be offered benefits depending on the level of their support. Gifts are tax deductible.
