August 12, 1955 was the deadliest day on the Chesapeake in modern times. Maritime journalist Kathy Bergren Smith recounts the tragic meeting of hurricane Connie and Levin J Marvel, a 128-foot commercial sailing vessel converted to “dude cruising.” The 68-year-old ship was no match for the hurricane; perhaps no ship would have been. Fourteen died when the ship broke apart in Herring Bay. Another 13 survived, most rescued by heroic citizens of the town of North Beach.
