Native Orchid Conservation through Citizen Science

June 30, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

Dr. Neil JacobsPresented by Café Scientifique, speaker Dr. Neil Jacobs will cover a 20-year project to document and protect native orchids species in North America.  It will be a photographic journey with stories about science, conservation, discovery, taxonomy, and community engagement. There are over 27,000 orchid species, yet less than 900 have been studied, and over half of those are considered vulnerable, threatened, or endangered.

The event will be held in person but also streamed via Zoom. To reserve a seat at 49 West, call 410-626-9796.

About the Speaker:  Neil Jacobs is the Chief Science Advisor for the Unified Forecast System at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).  In this role, he oversees an effort by the broad scientific community to develop a common, open-source modeling infrastructure for improving NOAA’s weather, water and climate models.  Prior to UCAR, Dr. Jacobs was the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observation and Prediction. Outside of work, he spends most of his free time surfing, fishing, and documenting and protecting populations of rare native orchid species. He holds BS degrees in mathematics and physics from the University of South Carolina and MS and PhD degrees in atmospheric science from North Carolina State University.
