HISTORY REVEALED, HISTORY TO BE HEALED: How Reparative Genealogy Can Bring About Reparations

June 10, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This Reparative Genealogy Teach-In sponsored by SURJ3A Showing Up for Racial Justice will engage participants in the practice of Reparative Genealogy and inspire reparations.

The speakers include:
– Briayna Cuffie, is a local Eastport historian, and co-founder of Reparations4Slavery – a portal designed to connect white people with the resources they need to better understand their history, the nature of institutional racism, how their families fit into the puzzle, and ways to begin to repair the damage.
– Lynda Davis, co-founder of SURJ3A and the Coming To The Table Annapolis Local Affiliate Group, will join Briayna in sharing how their ancestors’ stories have been affected by slavery, white supremacy, and racism and will discuss their respective journeys.
– Rebecca Benzer, SURJ3A member, will provide a presentation about genealogy, resources, and her family story.

The SURJ3A Healing Team will also introduce some practices for resilience and healing from Resmaa Menakem’s book: My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies.

Parts 2 and 3 sessions will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, 10:00-11:00 a.m. on ZOOM and on Saturday September 9, 2023, 3:00-5:00 p.m. (location TBD) and include support for research; sharing family stories; and discussions about commitment to reparations.
