BIG Book Sale January 16

January 16 @ 8:00 am - 2:00 pm

Books for International Goodwill, the signature project of the Parole Rotary Club, will hold another book sale on Saturday, January 16, 2021, from 8 am to 2 pm at 451 Defense Highway in Annapolis. Over 70,000 books covering all categories will be on the shelves. Books will be priced at $3 for hardbacks, $2 for trade soft bound, and $1 for pocket paperbacks. Children’s books are priced even lower. MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED.

B.I.G. collects over 1,000 books per day almost 9 million of which have been sent to underserved parts of the world over the past 21 years to keep these books alive and to assist in the growth of education and culture in developing countries. Interesting books not suitable for these shipments of educational material are regularly offered for sale to local residents at these very reasonable prices, and proceeds help pay for the shipments.

I have also written this article recently about a very successful 2020 from which you can draw if you wish.

2020 A Good Year for B.I.G.

In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, Books for International Goodwill, the signature project of the Parole Rotary Club, has had a very good year. B.I.G. shipped over 111,000 books to recipients in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, and Haiti. Locally during the year, B.I.G. provided over 1,500 books to Washington DC area prisons, over 3,000 books to the Tyler Heights Food Pantry, over 2000 books to the Little Free Library program in conjunction with the Annapolis Rotary Club, and smaller amounts to other local charities.

B.I.G., located at 451 Defense Highway in Annapolis, receives about 1,000 books every day. These are sorted by category and placed on storage shelves. Most books are sent overseas with almost 9 million sent since its inception 21 years ago. Other books less appropriate for educational purposes are placed on sale periodically to book dealers and to the general public. About 70,000 books are usually available at each sale. Public sales are currently set for Saturdays from 8am to 2pm on January 16, March 6, April 17, and June 5. Books are priced at $3 for hardbacks, $2 for trade soft bound, and $1 for pocket paperbacks. Children’s books are priced even lower. Masks and social distancing are required for the time being. Revenues from sales are used to offset the costs of international shipping.

B.I.G. is challenged with high rental and shipping costs, but has been able to augment book sale revenues with grants from Books for Africa, the CARES Act, and Friends of B.I.G.

B.I.G. operates with a very loyal group of volunteers, and is the largest known distributor of used books operated solely by volunteers.
