A Deep Dive with Renown Oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle: Exploring and Protecting the Planet’s Blue Heart

Eastport Yacht Club’s Environmental Committee presents a virtual talk by Dr. Sylvia Earle, renowned oceanographer, explorer, author and lecturer. She is President and Chairman of Mission Blue/The Sylvia Earle Alliance. She is the first National Geographic Society’s Explorer-in-Residence, called “Her Deepness” by the New Yorker and the New York Times, Living Legend by the Library of Congress, and first Hero for the Planet by Time Magazine.

Sylvia EarleDr. Earle led the first all-female team to live underwater (for a week in 1970), set a record for walking the ocean floor at a depth of 1,250 feet and was Chief Scientist at NOAA at a time when there were few women in high federal government positions.

Mission Blue’s goal is to inspire action to explore and protect the ocean through an alliance that includes more than 200 respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations. Dr. Earle will talk about “Hope Spots,” a global network of marine protected areas large enough to restore the ocean, the planet’s blue heart.
