TRANSCRIPT:

Good morning, it is Thursday, December 8th, 2022, and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief.

Getting excited about the Army-Navy Game on Saturday–need to use tomorrow to get my act together for it. Have you been catching the fun spirit spots? Send me links!   OK, we have a little bit of news, so let’s get into it, shall we?

The Board of Education did a thing yesterday. They approved the calendar for next year; school will start on August 28th and end on June 13. They are either banking on next to no snow or finally getting their act together on remote learning because they only built in three inclement weather days. And they also came up with a great idea…start planning school calendars two years in advance. Someone was wearing their thinking cap!

In his final weeks in office, Governor Larry Hogan is making sure people remember him. Yesterday they awarded $25 million to businesses across the state that have signed leases for long-time vacant property. The maximum grant is $530,000, and some local businesses that received them include Ala Mode Intimates, Eat Sprout, Freakin Sweets, Little Treasury Jewelers, Mara’s Wax Studio, Maryland Re-Entry Resource Center, Sea Salt Restaurant in the old Fado spot, Small Cakes, Tangled Balloons, and TropQ Pizza!

Tonight is round 2 for Midnight Madness, so make sure you get out there and shop local. Need some help? Check out our story on the front page of EyeOnAnnapolis.net for like 37 suggestions! And if that is not enough, tonight debuts the inaugural Annapolis Holiday Market at City Dock. from 4 pm to 10 pm tonight, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm, and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. And after that–poof, it’s gone! I saw a list of the vendors, and it looks REALLY cool. Do check it out.

The hero stories are starting to roll in.  Have you submitted yours?  If you have a hero in your life, and let’s face it, we have had plenty of heroes over the past three years. But go to militarybowl.org/budheroes and nominate them and tell Budweiser and the Military Bowl why they are your hero. Five heroes and their nominators will be selected to be in the Military Bowl Parade, get sweet tickets to the game on December 28th, and get some field access and in-game recognition.  There is no cost– militarybowl.org/budheroes .
And for tickets and more info– militarybowl.org

And my funny story for the day comes from BetMaryland.com. And because an online betting website knows Hollywood–they have figured out the most popular Christmas movies in Maryland…and I have to say I disagree, but that is just me. Number 5 is Elf, number 4 is A Christmas Story, number 3 is How the Grinch Stole Christmas (and yeah, that’s a TV special and not a movie–to hell with Jim Carey co-opting the Grinch), number 2 is The Polar Express, and the number one Christmas Movie for Marylanders is… Home Alone! I mean, really–where the hell is Die Hard?

OK, that’s all I got news-wise!  Podcast stuff–  Up this weekend on the Local Business Spotlight, we’ll hear from Steve from Third Eye Comics, and next Saturday it is Tricia..also known as the Gluten-Free Bakery Girl! And I did get that winter forecast bonus pod with George dropped yesterday, so do check that out!

And that’s a wrap.  As always, thank you all for being you. And a thank you to the sponsors for today’s Daily News Brief- Solar Energy Services, Alpha Engineering, and Scout & Molly’s!

Hang tight because we have George from DCMDVA Weather is here with your locally forecast weather, and Trevor is here with your Annapolis Makerspace Maker Minute.  All that is coming up in just a bit.
