TRANSCRIPT:

Good morning, it is Monday, August 15th, 2022, and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief.

If you see George from DCMDVA Weather out and about, I guess we can thank him for this utterly spectacular weekend. Man, was it beautiful! Saturday got in a 15-mile ride to Thomas Point Park and through a bunch of the neighborhoods and even had a wave from Larry Griffin. I went to Havre De Grace and did a hike along the Susquehanna and discovered a new record store there that has a great selection and is well priced–open only four days! OK, enough about my weekend, we have some news,  so let’s get into it, shall we?

Several news sources are reporting that the Natural Resources Police arrested and charged a 48-year-old Cape St. Claire man in the boating death of Laura Slattery on July 3. He is currently being held pending a hearing but is charged with negligent manslaughter by vessel (a felony) and criminally negligent manslaughter by a vessel (a misdemeanor). On July 3, Slattery and her husband were on their boat and hit by another boat from behind. That boat continued on and did not stop. Laura Slattery died from her injuries, and her husband was not injured. About a week after the incident, the Natural Resources Police recovered a boat in the area, but there is no word on if it was the suspect boat or not.

On Friday morning, the Anne Arundel County Police responded to a home in the 600 block of Kensington Avenue in Severna Park for a shooting. The caller to 911 reported that he accidentally shot his wife while cleaning a gun. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The police have said they have a suspect in custody. So, this may not be as accidental as first thought. Check back with EyeOnAnnapolis.net a bit later. Hopefully, we will have an update!

I hate to do this to you, but if you have some kids, you need to start thinking about returning to school. It is only two weeks away. And with 84,000 students, arranging back-to-school nights is an issue, but they got it done. You want to head to AACPS.org/BTSevents to find out your kids’ assigned days!

And as you get ready, you may need to shop, and this is the week to do it. This is our week to keep 6% out of the tax man’s hands. Most clothing and shoes are tax-free through next Saturday as long as the individual items are priced under $100. Also, backpacks– the first $40 of a backpack purchase is tax-free as well–that’s oddly specific, and I ‘d like to know the background on that. But get out and shop locally and save some bucks this week!

As if we haven’t had enough restaurant news in the past week. Miller’s Ale House broke ground on a new restaurant that will rise from the ashes of Macaroni Grill at the mall. They boast a huge tap line of draught beers and are known for their zingers–which is their take on a chicken nugget. The menu looks enticing. No timetable on opening..best guess might be spring 2023. They do have other locations in the area– Rockville, Hyattsville, Bel Air, and Sterling, VA.

Liquified Creative is celebrating 15 years in business, and they’ve been sharing some fun stuff with us. Recently they came up with 15 local places that are ideal for remote working … Big breath… Rise Up Coffee, Bitty & Beaus, Cafe Ole, Old Fox Books, Bread and Butter Kitchen, the library, Forward Brewing, Rec and Parks, Big Bean, Curate, Baltimore Coffee & Tea, Bean Rush, Red Bean, Starbucks, and Second Alarm Brewhouse. Whew! Check out the list on EyeOnAnnapoils.net or on Liquifiedcreative.com .. got any other ones to add?

I do hope you caught the Local Business Spotlight on Saturday–Jeremiah and his team are doing such cool things. And to think I knew him when he bartended at Middleton back in the day! Do check that out.

Here’s a flash contest. Do you like Chicago (the band), and want to go see Beginnings: A Tribute to the Music of Chicago on Wednesday night at Rams Head On Stage in some SWEET seats? Be the first to send me a DM or email and let me know the original name of Chicago. First to DM or email me scores a pair of tickets! Good luck!

OK, that’s a wrap– thank YOU, and a quick thank you to our sponsors for today’s Daily News Brief– Solar Energy Services, Alpha Engineering, and the Kristi Neidhardt Team of Northrop Realty, a Long and Foster Company,

Alrighty,  Ann Alsina from Covington Alsina is not here with your Monday Money Report–she is fighting off what appears to be a two or 3-week battle with COVID. But we do have George Young from DCMDVA Weather with your locally forecast weather.  All that coming up in just a bit!
