Baysox See Lead Slip Away in 6-5 Defeat

Baysox Field

Erie’s late-inning antics continued to foil the Baysox on Saturday night as the SeaWolves scored a run in each of the game’s final four innings to defeat Bowie 6-5.

Early it looked like Erie might run away. After a Drew Ward two-run home run in the first inning, the SeaWolves had the bases loaded with nobody out in the second. Baysox starter Grayson Rodriguez stepped up his game striking out three consecutive batters to leave the bases loaded.

Then the Baysox went to work. Trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning, the Baysox loaded the bases with no outs. With one down, Johnny Rizer smoked a grand slam to right to give the Baysox a 5-2 lead. It was the first Baysox grand slam since May 14th.

Grayson Rodriguez finished going five innings while allowing two runs with nine strikeouts.

But Bowie’s bullpen struggled. Erie plated a run in each of the game’s final four innings. With the game tied at 5 in the ninth inning, Josh Lester hit his team-leading 24th home run of the year to push Erie to the front again. It was the second time in the series that Erie took the lead in the ninth inning.

With the defeat, the Baysox remain in second place in the 12-team Double-A Northeast League. They are a half a game in championship series position with three weeks to play.

LHP Drew Rom will get the start Sunday afternoon, August 29th for the series finale for a 1:35 p.m. start.
