Baysox Outlast Reading for Fourth Straight Win

Baysox Field

In a game that featured 13 pitchers, 22 hits, and 19 runs over the course of 11 innings, the Bowie Baysox (57-37) plated three runs in the top of the 11th inning to win their fourth game in a row over the Reading Fightin Phils (36-60) at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Reading took an early lead against Grayson Rodriguez, scoring three runs in the first two innings, including a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first from Matt Kroon.

Bowie responded for six unanswered runs between the third and fourth. The visitors scored five runs in the fifth, sending nine men to the plate and recording six hits, including a Toby Welk two-run homer, his second home run in the last two days.

Reading drew within one, scoring two in the fourth, and after Bowie added a run on a Johnny Rizer RBI triple in the sixth, the Fightin Phils tied the game in the sixth with a two-run homer of their own from Matt Kroon.

The game would stay tied into extra innings, when Andrew Daschbach hit his third home run of the series, a solo shot in the top of the 10th, to put Bowie back in the lead. Reading, again, responded, tying the game in the bottom of the 10th.

The Baysox took the lead for good in the top of the 11th, sending eight men to the plate and scoring three runs without a hit. Reading reliever Nick Lackney walked two and hit two batters, and in the bottom of the 11th, Logan Gillaspie earned his second save in as many games.

For Bowie, Rodriguez threw 3.2 innings and allowed five runs, all earned, on six hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts. The five runs are the most Rodriguez has allowed in a game this season.

Tyler Burch, Tim Naughton, Morgan McSweeney, Diogenes Almengo, and Gillaspie all combined to finish the game in the bullpen, with Almengo getting the win.

Rizer finished the game 3-5, and Cadyn Grenier went 3-04 with two walks and two runs scored. Patrick Dorrian drove in three runs, and Daschbach and Welk both drove in two.

Bowie will be back at Prince George’s Stadium on Tuesday night for the first of six games against the Erie SeaWolves, with the starting pitcher yet to be announced. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
