TRANSCRIPT:

Good morning, it is Tuesday, August 24th,  2021 and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief.

I just realized that August 2021 is nearly history!  Fall is on our doorstep and I have no idea how summer went by so fast.  Today is a pretty light news day, so let’s get into it..shall we?

We lead off with two COVID stories.  Governor Hogan announced that according to the CDC, Maryland has achieved an 80% vaccination rate for Marylanders over 18. Hogan had set that goal for Labor Day–similar to the 70% goal for the 4th of July.  Methinks these are planned attainable goals! So good on Maryland. And for those who are waiting for final approval from the FDA for the Pfizer vaccine. All of the politicos and talking heads are saying this is such a game changer and I don’t see it.  I hope I am wrong, but those that were receptive have already received the vaccine. Those that have not basically distrust the government and have accused the CDC and government of flop flopping on pretty much everything–so I am not seeing a mad rush to get vaccinated now that another government agency has put. rubber stamp on an application. As I said, I hope I am wrong, but I think all this does is eliminate one excuse the anti-vax crowd can use. It may allow some companies to mandate, but again, most companies would rather not do that and feel if there are mandates, they should be handed down to them by the government. We shall see.

And while COVID put a whammy on a lot of businesses, I love a story about a business growing.  This time it is Annapolis Pediatrics, that longtime staple on Forbes Street in Annapolis is expanding up to the Dena. They will be opening another office at the Magothy Medial Professional Center at 18 Magothy Road in Pasadena and will open sometime this winter. That was the practice all my kids went to and I did not realize that they had other offices…apparently the Pasadena office will be their sixth with others in Annapolis, Crofton, Edgewater, Severna Park, and Kent Island. Who knew.

And if you are planning on jetting off somewhere this winter on Spirit airlines…first, my condolences…but more concerning than their horrible reputation, in their third-quarter earnings call, they said they expect mass cancellations in the coming months due to ongoing losses and labor shortages. Spirit, an ultra low cost, the no-frills carrier is the 2nd largest out of BWI flying 1.2 million passengers from BWI in 2020. I have no love for them and it reminds me of the adage– how cheap does a horrible trip need to be to make it worthwhile.

We’re dropping a bonus pod at noon with Carlo Biondi who will be playing Ram Head On Stage, but what is really cool and definitely unique is that Carlo is also the Executive Chef for the Rams Head Group and designs the menus and manages the kitchens for all of their locations. And, what makes it even better for me, he’s local…born and bred as a Broadneck Bruin–so make sure you catch that and if you are looking for a fun show–August 30th!

And finally, it’s ticket Tuesday.  And I promised a cool giveaway this week. I want you to take to social media and sing the praises of the DNB–remember to tag us on Twitter .. @eyeonannapolis or All Annapolis on Facebook. I will pick a winner for a 2-hour sail on the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s Wilma Lee Skipjack. And lest you feel the odds are not in your favor…I have $25 gift cards to Chesepiooc Real Ale Brewery and Mother’s Peninsula Grill to give away too–and I will cough up 4 more winners–if you are a runner-up, you can take your pick!  Good luck and make sure you tag us!

OK, that’s it for the news, but first a quick thank you to the four sponsors for the Daily News Brief– Solar Energy Services, the Kristi Neidhardt Team of Northrop Realty, a Long and Foster Company,  Rehab 2 Perform, and MacMedics!

Alrighty,  now hang tight, George Young is still not here from DCMDVA Weather as he is taking a well-deserved week off, so I am hacking away at the weather using the DCMDVA Weather app! So, hang tight, I’ll have that in about a minute!
