Schools pause small group in-person instruction and indoor athletics. Outdoor athletics to continue.

| November 05, 2020, 02:18 PM

In light of the county’s high COVID-19 seven-day average case incidence rate, Anne Arundel County Public Schools will temporarily cease small group, in-person instruction at the Center of Applied Technology – North and the county’s three developmental centers after instruction on Friday, November 6, Superintendent George Arlotto announced today.

Outdoor athletics practices and extracurricular activities will be allowed to continue, but indoor practices and activities will also cease after sessions on November 6.

The announcements come a day after the Board of Education voted to delay the full implementation of hybrid learning until the second semester.

“In-person opportunities for our special needs and technology students are critical and that is why they were the first students we brought back into our buildings this fall,” Dr. Arlotto said. “The case rate is at such a point now, however, that the prudent thing to do in alignment with the health and safety metrics established by the Anne Arundel County Department of Health is to return to a virtual environment. I want to be clear, however, that as soon as the metrics allow, we will bring these students back into our buildings.”

Students currently engaged in in-person learning will return to an entirely virtual environment beginning November 9.

Dr. Arlotto said the school system is also continuing to prepare for the start of competitive athletics in December, but will continue to monitor health and safety metrics and consult with the county Health Officer as that process continues.
