Annapolis Maritime Museum announces their new School in Nature

The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) announces the launch of a new full-time childcare program, School in Nature. School in Nature will be held at the AMM’s Park Campus located at Ellen O. Moyer Nature Park, 7300 Edgewood Road, Annapolis, and is currently accepting registrations. The AMM is responding to a huge demand for childcare and the desire to get kids off screens and into nature. The AMM recently received its license from the Maryland State Department of Education Office of Child Care.

The AMM’s School in Nature program is available to K-5th grade students Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm. This program is designed to serve as support for students as they work through their virtual learning curriculum. This online curriculum is supplemented with AMM-lead enrichment activities that focus on environmental stewardship and maritime education, including lots of nature play, art, and science. Enrichment activities include seining along the shoreline, fishing, nature walks, scavenger hunts, eco-art activities, experiments and more.

The historic Waterworks building on the grounds of the Park Campus features three permanent learning classrooms that will be adapted to facilitate students as they participate in virtual learning through a public or private school system.

Last year, the Education Center engaged over 12,000 students, teaching them about the history, ecology, environmental sustainability, and cultural traditions of the Chesapeake Bay through experiential, hands-on learning, primarily conducted outdoors. Studies indicate that exposure to nature and outdoor play builds confidence, promotes creativity and imagination, teaches responsibility, and gets kids moving. The AMM’s popular summer camp successfully reached over 250 students this summer and by closely following COVID recommendations from the State of Maryland had no incidences.
