About One Night In Miami

On one incredible night in 1964, four icons of sports, music, and activism gathered to celebrate one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. When underdog Cassius Clay, soon to be called Muhammad Ali, (Eli Goree), defeats heavy weight champion Sonny Liston at the Miami Convention Hall, Clay memorialized the event with three of his friends: Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and JimBrown (Aldis Hodge).

Based on the award-winning play of the same name, and directed by Regina King, One Night In Miami is a fictional account inspired by the historic night these four formidable figures spent together. It looks at the struggles these men faced and the vital role they each played in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 1960s. More than 40 years later, their conversations on racial injustice, religion, and personal responsibility still resonate.

Cast and filmmakers hope that audiences can be entertained by One Night In Miami and also want them to take something away from the film that may help change to continue.

One Night In Miami is a great way to remind the audience and introduce this younger generation to these four icons and their influence on history,” says Ben-Adir. “First and foremost, it is going to be a fun movie and a good time,” says Odom. “And then it’s the story of these four intelligent influential guys, their friendship and the change they brought to what was happening in society. The audience can also expect some emotional sparks to fly.”

“I’m just excited for audiences to see this film. It’s a fantastic message – a fantastic metaphor for the power and the strength and the beauty of actually supporting one another,” says Hodge. “We get to show men who are in different stages of their lives. They’re debating, they’re arguing, and then they have to figure out how to come back together and get on the same page and not hold grudges. They have to figure out how to be in the struggle together. They have to figure out how to respect each other’s potential and power and how to support one another. We see a lot of love, in a very different way, between these men. “

Annapolis Film Festival audience members are asked to log in no later than 9 PM to unlock their virtual screening. Please visit www.annapolisfilmfestival.org to purchase tickets.
