BONUS PODCAST: One man’s quest to plant 20 million oysters in the Chesapeake Bay

| October 20, 2020, 01:46 PM

On September 26, 2020, Chris Hopkinson from Arnold was the first person to ever transit the entire length of the Chesapeake Bay…. on a stand up paddleboad!

It took 9 days to do it, but along the way Chris got to experience something most of us never will in a way that ever fewer will. One man, one paddle, one board. Gliding 8″ off the surface of the third largest estuary in the world.  All for 20 million oysters!

Liquified Creative Annapolis

Chris padddled to help the Oyster Recovery Partnership plant the bivalves that do so much to clean the Bay.

And while his paddle is done, his efforts are ongoing. There is still a bit of money to raise to get to his $200,000 goal. Plus Salt Life will be coming out with a line of t-shirts to benefit the cause, adn Chris is planning to turn this into some type of annual event.

Would he do it again? What was the biggest challenge? What was the biggest reward? Did he almost call it quits? How bad does one smell after paddling the Chesapeake Bay for 9 days?  Have a listen and get your answers.

And for sure, go to and make a contribution! You can text BAYPADDLE to 44321 to quickly and easily donate $10.  And while you are there, check out the excellent blog of the voyage complete with video along with the highs and the lows!
