Annapolis to sponsor Dia de los Muertos Road Rally this Sunday

The City of Annapolis is hosting a Dia de los Muertos Road Rally and Caravan on Sunday, November 1. The event will begin at 2 p.m. with the road rally, and a caravan will wend its way through the City beginning at 4:30 p.m.  At 6 p.m., the movie “Coco” will be shown outdoors at the Chesapeake Children’s Museum on Silopanna Road.

Participants should dress up and decorate their cars to celebrate Day of the Dead, a traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico and many Latin American countries. The holiday typically involves gathering to remember friends and family members who have died. It is also known as All Saint’s Day or All Souls’ Day.

The Mayor’s Office helped to plan the event along with the Chesapeake Children’s Museum, Center of Help, WRNR, and community volunteers.

The event will begin with paralel stops at Pip Moyer and Chesapeake Children’s Museum for decorating cars and showing off costumes at 2 p.m.  At the same time, a road rally adventure will navigate through City streets with stops at at least five locations. Along the route, participants can see the Hispanic flags along Main Street and view the murals in the Annapolis Design District. The station stops will include:

  • Pip Moyer Rec Center (273 Hilltop Lane, Annapolis) will have car decorating and Caravan Prepping. Families and individuals participating in the road rally must begin by registering here. At 4:30 pm, the caravan will depart from this station.
  • Chesapeake Children’s Museum (25 Silopanna Road, Annapolis) will have car decorating and supplies for face painting available, as well as arts and crafts activities for children. At 6 p.m., a showing of the movie, “Coco.”
  • Annapolis Library (1410 West Street, Annapolis) will have Macarena dancing, spanish book- check outs, and a Resource Fair led by Center of Help.
  • City Dock (Dock Street, Annapolis) will have an altar honoring the dead and dancers by Market Place.
  • Hartcorn Studios (98 Edgewood Road, Annapolis) will have a photo booth set up for professional photos of individuals and families who dressed up for “Day of the Dead” from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
  • Maryland Theater of Performing Arts (3 Park Place, Annapolis) will have dancers performing  American Originals Drumming – Orange Grove Dance.

Every station will function as an independent event open to the public, but participants who decorate their car, dress in costume, post photos or visit all of the stations will have an opportunity to win prizes. Road Rally participants should register at Pip Moyer and use the hashtag #AnnapolisDDM while posting social media. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, November 4th on the city’s website: www.annapolis.gov/juntos

As part of the celebration, participants are asked to follow all Covid precautions, including the wearing of face coverings and physical distancing. Hand sanitizer will be available at each of the stations and an outline safety plan will be shared at each station and throughout the caravan.
