CRAB Cup and the Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta organizers have each decided to cancel post and prerace parties based on safety concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic.
CRAB’s Board of Directors and Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta organizers coordinated their independent reviews and both determined that it is very challenging to host an event even with stringent social distancing, disinfecting, and temperature testing; and, have it an enjoyable experience.
Both organizations are moving forward with the on-the-water races and fundraising activities essential to their charitable missions and will use virtual platforms for awards, sponsor promotion, and on-line auction activities. The CRAB Cup takes place on Saturday, August 15th; and, The Leukemia Cup on Saturday, September 5th, with Eastport Yacht Club serving as the host for both events.
According to CRAB President Brad LaTour, “The EYC Commodore, Race Committee, and staff were incredibly focused on guest safety in all of the planning for the party. We are fortunate to have such strong partners and hosts for the race this year and we look forward to returning for the party in 2021.”
In the end, the decision by both organizations focused on making the sailing and fundraising the most important goal of the events. The Hospice Cup had already cancelled its post-race party.
All three charities are participants in the Triple Crown of Charity Sailing Trophy that is awarded to the skipper raising the most donations and finishing highest in the three sailing races. Competitors are recognized on a magnificent trophy, sponsored by Weems & Plath, that is on display in The Market House in Annapolis. This competition is the only one in the country that brings together three charities to work together to raise donations.
