Police release more information on yesterday’s fatal bicycle accident

The Anne Arundel County Police have release additional information about the fatal accident yesterday involving a vehicle and seven bicyclists along East College Parkway which we reported on yesterday.

On March 8, 2020 at approximately 12:36 p.m., Anne Arundel County Police officers responded to East College Parkway near Bay Head Road in Annapolis for a crash involving a SUV and multiple bicycles.

A GMC was eastbound on East College Parkway in the area of Bay Head Road.

A group of seven bicyclists were riding westbound on East College Parkway. There was no shoulder, so the bicyclists were riding on the right edge of the roadway.

For an unknown reason, the GMC, operated by a 67-year old male from Annapolis, crossed the center of the roadway and struck the group of westbound bicycles.

One rider, identified as Arthur H. Carter, Jr. (59) of Hanover, MD,  was pronounced dead on the scene by Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel. The deceased was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy. Two other cyclists were transported to am area hospital.

Preliminarily, the primary cause of the crash appears to be the driver of the GMC failing to remain in a single lane. Speed or alcohol does not appear to have contributed to this crash.

No charges have been filed against the driver and the investigation is continuing.
