Patriot League moves to cancel all spring practices and competitions, Navy suspends all athletics

The Patriot League, of which the United States Naval Academy is a member of, has decided to cancel all spring sports practices and competition for their member schools.  The League released a statement on March 12, 2020 with an effective date of March 16, 2020.

Recognizing that the health and safety of our students and broader communities is our priority, and based on the ongoing spread of COVID 19 (2019 novel Coronavirus), the Patriot League Council of Presidents has made the difficult and challenging decision to cancel all spring athletics practices and competitions through the remainder of the academic year.

The majority of Patriot League institutions have announced a temporary or semester-long transition to remote learning.  While we recognize the deep disappointment that will be felt by our student-athletes, coaches, and communities, a continuation of spring seasons is untenable.

The decision will be effective Monday, March 16.

Individual institutions will decide the championship participation status of winter teams and student-athletes who have qualified.

Institutions in the Patriot League include:

  • American University
  • Boston University
  • Bucknell
  • College of the Holy Cross
  • Colgate University
  • Lafayette College
  • Lehigh University
  • Loyola University Maryland
  • United States Military Academy
  • United States Naval Academy

In a statement from the Naval Academy Athletic Association, all Navy athletics will be suspended effective Monday

Saturday’s men’s lacrosse game against Johns Hopkins has been cancelled. Johns Hopkins has suspended all spring athletic activities through April 12 and the Patriot League has suspended all games and practices starting Monday, March 16.

The Naval Academy Athletic Association will suspend all athletic activities as of Monday, March 16 until further notice.
