Out with Modell’s Sporting Goods and in with Dick’s

Modell’s Sporting Goods has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is planning on closing all of the remaining stores including the one in Annapolis. The filing was made on Wednesday, March 11, 2020.

According to Digital Journal, Modell’s stores will immediately initiate store closing liquidation sales of sporting goods equipment, footwear, team apparel and active apparel and will continue its online sales during this process.

In a statement released to the media, Modell’s CEO Mitchell Modell, “This is certainly not the outcome I wanted, and it is one of the most difficult days of my life. But I believe liquidation provides the greatest recovery for our creditors. We have partnered with Tiger Capital Group to liquidate the remaining stores beginning Friday morning, March 13.”

Modell’s was the only true sporting goods store in Annapolis; however, Dick’s Sporting Goods will be opening in Annapolis and is in the process of renovating the former Burlington Coat Factory location on Defense Highway (next to Best Buy). An opening date was not available.
