The three winners of the statewide competition held last November will each perform with the LSO on March 7 at 7:30 in Key Auditorium on the St. John’s College campus in this seventh annual Rising Stars! concert. These are three of the most exceptional high school musicians in Maryland, and it is always exciting to witness their growth performing in front of a live audience with a full symphony orchestra.
Also appearing with the orchestra are Arundel Vocal Arts Society, the Adult Choir from Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, and the All Children’s Chorus of Annapolis.
The LSO, as our community orchestra getting involved in community affairs, is taking this opportunity to support the proposed Maryland Conference and Cultural Center and to help spread awareness of what it would bring to our community.
The program includes the first movement of Dvorak’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53 played by Rising Star Miyabi Henriksen, Weber’s Concertino, Op. 26 played by Rising Star Krystal Wu, the third movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, played by Rising Star Elizabeth Boyson, Rutter’s Mass of the Children, conduced by Anna Binneweg, LSO’s Music Director/Conductor, and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, conducted by Guest Conductor JoAnn Kulesza, the Conductor and Music Director of AVAS.
Elizabeth Boyson currently participates with the Peabody Pre-Conservatory Violin Program and the Peabody Youth Orchestra. Elizabeth’s most recent competition took her to the international stage in the Ilona Feher International Violin Competition, in Budapest, Hungary.
Miyabi Henriksen,15, is in the 10th grade at Howard High School and is a member of the Pre-Conservatory Violin Program at the Peabody Institute. She won the concerto competition at the Philadelphia International Music Festival in 2017. She has performed in Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall and Merlin Concert Hall of the Kaufman Music Center.
Krystal Wu, 15, is a sophomore at Centennial High School and a member of the Howard County High School Gifted and Talented Symphony Orchestra. Krystal was the national finalist of “The President’s Own” Marine Band 2019 High School Concerto Competition and the Columbia Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition in 2019.
The All Children’s Chorus of Annapolis is a community chorus that strives for vocal excellence, diversity in their membership, and making a difference in the lives of their children. The Managing Artistic Director of ACCA is Lauren Walker who currently serves as the Director of Choral Music at Central Middle School in Anne Arundel County.
Anna Binneweg is the Music Director/Conductor of the Anne Arundel Community College Symphony Orchestra where she also serves as Associate Professor of Music in addition to being the Music Director/Conductor of the LSO. She holds a Doctor of Music degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University. She made her European conducting debut in Lviv, Ukraine, in 2012.
The LSO, our community orchestra involved in community affairs, is central Maryland’s premier community orchestra made up of local professionals, teachers, military musicians, exceptional amateurs and students. They play for the love of making high-quality classical and light classical music for themselves and for their listeners, and they have the development of young musicians as part of their mission.
