Earlier today, the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities announced that the eight senior activity center buildings will close for an indefinite period of time. The Department of Recreation and Parks uses senior centers to facilitate recreation programs.

Starting March 13, 2020 these programs will be postponed until further notice.

Also, today, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education issued a statement indicating that no outside groups will be permitted use in indoor school facilities. The Department of Recreation and Parks uses many county schools to facilitate our recreation and athletic programs. Starting March 13, 2020 these programs will be postponed until further notice. Our School Age Child Care service will still operate as normal but with modified procedures.

“The health and safety of our residents, staff and volunteers is always our number one priority,” said Jessica Leys, Deputy Director of Recreation and Parks. “We will follow recommended guidelines from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and our state and local health agencies. We share your concern about this issue and will continue to align our policies and procedures with the latest recommended preventative measures.”

Recreation and Parks staff will continue to implement the following everyday preventive steps that are always recommended to slow the spread of respiratory illnesses like colds, flu and Novel Coronavirus.

The department asks that any residents who visit our facilities do the same:

  • If you are sick, stay home, except to get medical care.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not
    available.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using standard cleaning practices.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, your sleeve, or your elbow.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

The department will continue to closely monitor this issue, and will update residents on any changes to our facility hours, programs, or services. Guidelines and recommendations are likely to be interim and subject to change as we learn more. For updated information about COVID-19, please call 2-1-1, or visit www.aahealth.org/coronavirus .
