The retail purge continues with the announcement that the Sears in the Westfield Annapolis mall will be closing by April 2020 with liquidation sales beginning immediately.
In a statement released by Transformco, Inc. (Sears current parent company) this morning, they have made the decision to close the 125,000 square foot anchor at the Annapolis Mall as well as the satellite Sears auto center located adjacent to the store.
This closure will leave only 3 stores in Maryland–Bel Air, Glen Burnie and Silver Spring.
Sears in Annapolis was originally the anchor at the former Parole Plaza (now the Annapolis Towne Centre) in 1961 and relocated to the Annapolis Mall in the mid 1990s. They underwent one expansion at the Annapolis Mall and at one point had a store-within-a store when Sears had acquired Land’s End.
The store currently employs about 200 people in full and part-time capacities.

At one point, Wegmans was considering relocating to the Sears location but decided to pursue a standalone option on Riva Road opposite the Annapolis Towne Centre. That deal fell through when the company and the County could not come to terms on the requirements. We have reached out to Wegmans to see if they are now reconsidering the mall location in light of this news, but have not received a response at this point.
