Rebels down the Black Bears in fight filled evening on the ice

It was a tough, physical game that saw two pairs of players drop the gloves for fights between the Maryland Black Bears and Jamestown Rebels. After 60 minutes of play, it was the Jamestown Rebels picking up its third win in the past four tries over Maryland, downing the Black Bears 3-2.

The Black Bears struck one minute and 58 seconds into the game when forward Luke Mountain scored on the breakaway to make it 1-0 on a wrist shot goal. The Rebels responded minutes later with a goal from forward Janis Vizbelis on the breakaway to make it 1-1. Cameron Recchi of the Black Bears responded before the period was over by scoring on a rebound to give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead.

The second period started with fisticuffs when Maryland defenseman Hampus Rydqvist fought Jamestown defenseman Seth Bergeron. Moments later, Rebels’ forward Noah Finstrom scored on the powerplay through a screen to make it 2-2. Later in the period, there was another fight when Black Bears’ forward Hunter Brackett fought Jamestown forward Carter Korpi.

The lone goal in the third period belonged to the Rebels and it was the difference-maker in the end. Jamestown forward Zach Brydges scored on a rebound to make the score 3-2. The Black Bears had some chances with the extra attacker in the games’ final minutes but could not capitalize and fell, 3-2. This is Maryland’s eighth loss in nine games.

The Black Bears hit the road next weekend against the New Jersey Titans but return home on February 14th against the Maine Nordiques. This will be the Nordiques’ first-ever visit to Piney Orchard Ice Arena.
