Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Jamie Lee, 22, of Bristow, Virginia, was recently selected as a Churchill Scholar. This year, over 127 candidates from 82 participating institutions competed for one of the 15 scholarships awarded.
Lee is a computer science major, Japanese minor and one of nine Trident Scholars in the Naval Academy’s Class of 2020. She is currently conducting independent research through the Trident Scholars program; her project, titled “Oblivious k-Nearest Neighbors for Secure Map Applications,” aims to improve the security of map applications through the development of a novel data structure. During her tenure at the Academy, she has interned at the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a program developer and data analyst. In 2019, Lee attended six conferences and published a conference paper for the 2019 Military Sensing Symposia pertaining to her research in aircraft classification conducted at the NRO.
At the academy, Lee is a squad leader for 3rd Company and serves as the 1st Battalion Honor Adviser, overseeing the honor training and remediation process for more than 700 midshipmen. Lee is a third-degree brown belt for the academy’s Judo Club, a violist in the Symphony Orchestra, and an active member of the Women in Cyber and Computing Club which helps to plan, coordinate and volunteer at events promoting female leadership and involvement in computing.
At the University of Cambridge, Lee intends to pursue a master’s in machine learning and machine intelligence, and is interested in exploring practical applications of visual tracking algorithms and machine learning to intelligence collection and analysis techniques. Following her time in the Churchill Scholar program, she will begin her training as a Naval Cryptologic Warfare Officer.
The Churchill Scholarship provides funding to American students for a year of master’s study at the University of Cambridge, based at Churchill College. The program was created by Sir Winston Churchill in order to fulfill his vision of US-UK scientific exchange with the goal of advancing science and technology on both sides of the Atlantic, helping to ensure our future prosperity and security.
