Hate Crimes and Hate Bias Forum to be held at Anne Arundel Community College

On Wednesday, February 26 an Anne Arundel Hate Crimes and Bias Forum will be held at the Anne Arundel Community College. The event is sponsored by a number of local governmental and private organizations.  The public is welcome to this free event. It will run from 6 to 9 pm at the Colleges Kaufmann Theater in the Pascal Center for the Performing Arts, 101 College Parkway, Arnold. The first part of the forum will be dedicated to describing the difference between a hate crime and a hate bias incident including the differing penalties under state and federal law.  The speakers will include representatives from the US Department of Justice and local experts from the county police, States Attorneys Office, legislature and Board of Education. The second part will be a panel exploring” Critical Community Issues” around hate crimes.  This panel will include representatives from the State Attorney Generals Office, black clergy, Hispanic leaders, religious community leaders including Muslim and Jewish representatives, civil rights leaders, and LGBTQ representatives.

The third element of the evening will have the audience divide into breakout groups of their choice with facilitators working with each group.

The Anne Arundel County Human Relations Commission, one of the events sponsors, will prepare a report to the County Executives with recommended next steps for action.

The forum is sponsored by Anne Arundel County Government, Anne Arundel County Human Relations Commission, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Anne Arundel Community College, Anne Arundel County NAACP and City of Annapolis Human Relations Commission among others.
