Severna Park High School students help the homeless

Seven High Schoolers Partnered With Happy Helpers For The Homeless, Visiting One Of Baltimore’s Homeless Shelters

Severna Park High schoolers, Lauren Campbell and Rachel Reed, and their team Janna Chang, Andrew Tangrea, Garret Taylor, Jennifer Bertha, and Natalie Kelly.  are a part of the Leadership Institute at Severna Park High School. The Leadership Institute teaches students how to lead for positive change in their communities.

The team visited Our Daily Bread in Baltimore MD while partnering with the organization “Happy Helpers for the Homeless”, to help organize donations and give them out to those facing homelessness who come get what they can. The donations include any type of clothing, jackets, non-perishable food items, blankets, and toiletries such as deodorant, toothpaste, etc. The organization meets at the establishment every Sunday giving out donations to a countless number of homeless people in the Baltimore area. Along with volunteering at the center, the group brought their own donations to give out.

These students worked on this project throughout Fall and Winter 2019, striving to meet the goals they set in September. The goals they were trying to (and did) accomplish included collecting money and food donations to create a number of ‘Bag A Breakfast Kits’ and ‘Teenager Outreach Boxes’ to donate to the organization. To get there, they held fundraisers at lunches to collect money from students at their school and group members collected food donations from neighbors, friends, and relatives.
