Scott Shaffer, Candidate for District 6 Board of Education

Scott Shaffer has officially filed as a candidate for the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.  Shaffer, an Anne Arundel County native and longtime Annapolis Neck resident, is seeking the newly created seat representing District 6.  This year marks the first time the district’s voters will have the opportunity to elect their representative to the school board.

As a former senior advisor to County Executive Laura Neuman, Shaffer analyzed the school system’s operating and capital (construction) budgets, as well as the state of Maryland’s education funding formulas.  He brought attention to the lack of state education aid spent on Anne Arundel County as compared to its surrounding jurisdictions.

Currently, Shaffer works as the Chief Financial Officer for a Washington, DC law firm.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Guilford College, and a master’s degree in Applied Economics from The Johns Hopkins University.

Among the issues central to his campaign, Shaffer plans on advocating for fast-tracking long delayed school construction projects, revamping the budget process, and reallocating non-classroom positions to better staff schools and reduce the student-teacher ratio.  He also supports later school start times for high schools, and continuing the current practice of beginning the school year after Labor Day.
