Library has plenty on tap for Black History Month

Anne Arundel County Public Library is offering the following programs to celebrate African American History Month.

Chesapeake Underground

Saturday, February 1 at 2 pm at the Riviera Beach Library

Celebrate Black History Month at a lecture by Vince Leggett discussing the black watermen of the Chesapeake Bay and his book Chesapeake Through Ebony Eyes.

Maryland’s African American History & Cooking: A Delicious Story

Tuesday, February 4 at 6:30 pm at the Odenton Library

Get up close and personal with artifacts that paint a picture of African American life through food.

Baba Jamal Koram: The StoryMan

Wednesday, February 5 at 10:30 am at the Annapolis Library at Monarch Academy

Thursday, February 6 at 10:30 am at the Broadneck Library

Master storyteller Baba Jamal Koram brings storytelling alive with the history, humor, music and lore of African and African-American cultures.

For preschoolers

One Voice: Music and the Black Vote Recital

Wednesday, February 5 at 6:30 pm at the Glen Burnie Libary

Saturday, February 8 at 2:30 pm at the Easport-Annapolis Neck Library

The Centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment is bought to life through music and narration produced by the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts.

A Taste of African Music and Culture

This program offers an opportunity to explore African games, songs, drumming and dancing in a fun learning environment.

BESA, which means “Come Dance” in the Akan language of Ghana, is a fun aerobic and cardio workout that uses African dance forms and techniques.

What’s Art Got to Do with It: Art and Black History

Saturday, February 8 at 1 pm at the Mountain Road Library

Join local artist and author Lilian Thomas Burwell (From Painting to Painting as Sculpture: The Journey of Lilian Thomas Burwell) as she calls attention to the importance of each individual’s creative gifts and potential.

Culture Queen’s Dance Party

Wednesday, February 12 at 10:30 am at the Linthicum Library

Join Culture Queen on an interactive journey through the Swinging 60’s as she teaches your royal children the hottest dances of the era.

African American History Month Movie: Killer of Sheep (NR, 1977)

African American Oystermen on the Chesapeake

Saturday, February 15 at 10:30 am at the Edgewater Library

Relive the days of the life of an African American Oysterman. Tie on an apron and step back in time with us in this hands on program.

Printmaking Workshop for Kids

Saturday, February 15 at 2 pm the Edgewater Library

Explore the printmaking process by making a creative relief print inspired by artist Elizabeth Catlett. This workshop is presented by the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture.

African Beats

Tuesday, February 18 at 10 am at the Deale Library

Tap your feet to Jazz while listening to a story about musicians from the past. Children will handle musical instruments and decorate an instrument with water color paint.
