Tomahawks top the Black Bears 4-1

The Johnstown Tomahawks were successful in beating the Maryland Black Bears for the thirteenth straight time with a 4-1 win. The Black Bears lost their fourth straight home game, leaving them winless at home during the 2019-20 season.

The first period was a slow start for both teams. Action picked up as the period progressed. This led to the game’s first goal by the Johnstown Tomahawks thanks to Carson Gallagher. He received a pass from teammate Bennett Stockdale and shot the puck on the backhand past the blocker of Maryland Black Bears’ goalie Andrew Takacs to make it 1-0.

Maryland tied the game in the second period with a power-play goal from Kyle Oleksiuk. Wilmer Skoog passed the puck to Oleksiuk who shot the puck past Tomahawks’ goalie David Tomeo to tie the game 1-1. This was Oleksiuk’s first goal as a Black Bear.

The third period saw three goals scored, all by the Tomahawks. Bennett Stockdale put Johnstown ahead with a power-play goal from the point to make it 2-1. Later in the period, Tomahawks’ forward Pavel Kharin snuck the puck past Takacs near the crease to make it 3-1. Spencer DenBeste finished off the scoring for Johnstown, sliding the puck past a shuffling Takacs for a shorthanded goal. Both goalies played fantastic, but it was David Tomeo stealing the show once again. Tomeo allowed two goals in six periods of hockey against his former team.

The Black Bears will hit the road for the weekend of October 18th and 19th against the Jamestown Rebels. Maryland will return home to Piney Orchard Ice Arena against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights for the weekend of October 25th and 26th.
