5 goal second period pushes Titans to sweep over Maryland Black Bears

The second period proved to be problematic once more for the Maryland Black Bears, as the New Jersey Titans scored five times en route to an 8-5 win. The win led to New Jersey sweep Maryland for the second consecutive season-opening series.

The Black Bears struck twice in the first and led 2-0 after one period of play. Wilmer Skoog recorded his second goal of the season, ripping a shot top right side to make it 1-0. Logan Kittleson made it 2-0 on a two-on-one rush on Titans goalie Patrick Pugliese.

The second-period scoring was all New Jersey. Titans defender Brody Medeiros struck on a slap shot on the power play, followed 31 seconds later by Matt Cameron to tie the game 2-2. Cameron scored just over a minute later on the power play to make it 3-2. Kyle Jeffers and Michael Outzen scored before the period ended to make it 5-2 before the second period came to an end. The five goals were scored in a span of three minutes and 33 seconds.

Maryland got some life at the start of the third when forward Brayden Stannard scored on a power play low left side to make it 5-3. New Jersey responded with two goals from Kyler Head to increase the lead to 7-3. Wilmer Skoog got the Black Bears back in the game, scoring twice on wrist shots just over a minute apart to make it 7-5 and to complete his hat trick. However as the Maryland goalie Gavin Abric left the playing service for the extra attacker, the puck took a bad bounce which allowed Kyler Head to score his hat trick goal to make it 8-5. Abric made 28 saves on 35 shots for Maryland while Pugliese made 24 saves on 29 shots.

The Black Bears head out to the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota, for their next four games. The Showcase starts Wednesday, September 18th against the Minnesota Magicians with a puck drop at 10:30 AM CDT. They follow this up with match-ups the next three days against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, Janesville Jets, and Minot Minotauros. All games can be streamed live on HockeyTV.
