Jack Wynkoop tossed a complete game four-hit shutout as the Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Bowie Baysox 4-0 in the series finale Wednesday evening.
For the first time in the series, the Yard Goats scored the first run of a game. Vance Vizcaino led off the third inning with a triple off Michael Baumann, who was making the first Double-A start of his career. Baumann struck out the next two batters, but with two outs Arvicent Perez snuck a single into right field, scoring Vizcaino and giving Hartford a 1-0 lead.
That run in the third was the only run Hartford would score against Baumann in what was a very impressive start. The 23-year-old tossed 6.0 innings and struck out five batters on the night, lowering his ERA to 0.75 in 12.0 innings with Bowie this season.
The Yard Goats added a second run in the seventh off reliever Francisco Jimenez. Tyler Nevin led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Mylz Jones doubled down the left field line, making it 2-0 Hartford.
In the eighth, Hartford added another run when Manuel Melendez scored on a throwing error. Colton Welker then came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
Bowie’s best chance to score came in the fifth inning, when Rylan Bannon singled and Jesmuel Valentin doubled to lead off the inning. After a pop out and a strikeout, Chris Clare was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Wynkoop induced a fly out to end the inning.
The Baysox return home on Thursday night to begin a four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators heading into the All-Star break. Thursday night’s July 4th contest features an Independence Day celebration including a fireworks display after the game. Bruce Zimmermann will start for Bowie opposing Harrisburg hurler Tyler Mapes. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
