Officer accidentally discharges weapon while investigating trespassing complaint

On May 28, 2019 at approximately 9:18 pm officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to a report of a male breaking into the Shipley’s Crossing clubhouse, located at 522 Donner Way in Severna Park.
The first officer on scene located the suspect one street away from the clubhouse. The suspect ran from the officer and eventually made his way back to the clubhouse where he left his vehicle. The suspect smashed out the window to the vehicle while the officer was commanding him to stop and get down on the ground.
Not knowing what the suspect was pulling from the vehicle the officer drew his firearm, upon drawing the weapon a round fired into the ground. No one was injured and the suspect was taken into custody.
The Anne Arundel County Police Training Academy Firearms Unit immediately began an investigation into the weapon system itself to determine if there was a mechanical failure. It was determined that the discharge was not due to a weapon system failure. The officer is an 8-year-veteran of the department and a Corporal assigned to the Bureau of Patrol. There is an administrative review being conducted and no further information is releasable at this time.
Suspect: Alexander William Stutz, 2-19-98, 700 block of South Camp Meade Road, Linthicum, MD, 21090
Charges: Trespassing & Possession of Marijuana
