Baysox walk off with 3-2 extra innings win

Mason McCoy grounded a game-winning single in the 10th inning to lift the Bowie Baysox to a 3-2 win over the Erie SeaWolves in front of 1,466 at Prince George’s Stadium Thursday night.

Squaring off with the No. 2 Tigers prospect in RHP Matt Manning, the Baysox (13-26-) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. With two outs, Jesse Valentin sent a RBI double to dead center field to plate T.J. Nichting. One batter later, McCoy grounded a RBI triple down the first base line to score Valentin for his first RBI of the game.

A two-run Kade Scivicque home run tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, but Bruce Zimmermann responded to record his fourth quality start of the year. The lefty held the SeaWolves to two earned runs on three hits, striking out four batters over six innings.

RHP Pedro Araujo struck out a pair of SeaWolves en route to a pair of scoreless relief innings. RHP Taylor Grover and RHP Francisco Jimenez each tossed a scoreless inning of their own, with Jimenez earning his first career Double-A win.

Jimenez stranded a pair of baserunners in the top of the 10th inning and the Baysox earned the win two batters into their first extra-inning at-bats. Preston Palmeiro started at second base and advanced to third base on a fielder’s choice bunt by Valentin. After beating the throw to third from Erie pitcher Drew Carlton, Palmeiro scored on a walk-off single down the first base line by McCoy.

Bowie and Erie (19-17) continue their four-game series Friday night at 7:05 p.m., when RHP Marcos Molina (2-4, 3.86) takes on RHP Logan Shore (2-2, 4.32). The night contest is another chance to honor Maryland students who completed the “Read and Hit a Home Run” reading program during the 2018-19 school year.

The next couple games will highlight students from Howard, Queen Anne’s & Anne Arundel Counties, with the Baysox wearing special jerseys designed by contest winner Annie Mejia — a fourth grader from Arnold’s Belvedere Elementary School.
