Akron takes series finale in 11th inning

A three-run Daniel Johnson home run in the 11th inning gave the Akron RubberDucks a 5-2 win over the Bowie Baysox in front of 7,501 at Canal Park Wednesday morning.

A pitcher’s duel brought the scoreless game to extra innings. In the 10th inning, T.J. Nichting launched a two-run home run to deep left-center field. His first career Double-A home run drove in Chris Clare, who began the inning on second base, for the outfielder’s seventh and eighth RBI of 2019.

Akron (17-21) tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Tanner Chleborad got Jorma Rodriguez to ground into a forceout at home plate. One pitch later, Alexis Pantoja lined out to Rylan Bannon, who doubled Ka’ai Tom off second base to escape the jam.

Alex Wells turned in his best performance of the season statistically, despite taking a no-decision in the contest. The lefty threw seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out a season-high seven Akron batters. The Australian retired 13 of the final 14 batters from the third inning through the seventh inning.

The Baysox (12-26) return home for a weeklong homestand beginning Thursday at 6:35 p.m. against the Erie SeaWolves, Double-A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. LHP Bruce Zimmermann squares off with RHP Matt Manning, with the lefty looking for his second straight home win.

Thursday night is also Margaritaville Night at Prince George’s Stadium. Buddy Cosmo will perform “Jimmy Buffett”-themed music and $2 draft specials will be offered during another Baysox LIVE! Happy Hour, presented by Bud Light.
