Baysox drop season opener to Harrisburg 8-4

Anderson Feliz recorded a multi-hit game in the season opener as the Bowie Baysox fell to the Harrisburg Senators, 8-4, in front of 4,398 at FNB Field Thursday night.

The Baysox (0-1) recorded their first run of the 2019 season in the top of the second inning. Ademar Rifaela clubbed a one-out double to straightaway center field. After advancing to third base on a Martin Cervenka single, Cael Brockmeyer recorded the first RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to right field, putting the visitors up 1-0.

Harrisburg (1-0) responded with a Rhett Wiseman three-run home run in the bottom half of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Two innings later, Tres Barrera tacked on another run with a RBI single in the fourth inning. An outfield assist from Yusniel Diaz in right field prevented any further run production.

Chuck Taylor provided another boost for the hosts in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and two out, the No. 8 hitter launched a grand slam to the left field concourse to push the Senators ahead, 8-1.

The Baysox answered half an inning later to cut into the deficit. Preston Palmeiro clubbed a RBI double to the right-centerfield gap, easily scoring Brockmeyer, for the No. 8 batter’s first Double-A hit of his professional career.

Bowie crept closer in the eighth inning, using the long ball for the first time this season. Anderson Feliz (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI) launched a two-run home run down the RF line, scoring Diaz and cutting the deficit to 8-4.

On the mound, RHP Jay Flaa continued his shutdown pitching in the Eastern League with 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. After holding batters to a .155 clip in 2018, Flaa struck out five of his seven batters faced to begin his 2019 campaign from the bullpen.

The two Western Division rivals square off Friday night at 7 p.m. ET on City Island in Harrisburg. RHP Hunter Harvey is slated to make his first start since the middle of 2018 against Senators RHP Erick Fedde.
