Black Bears playoff hopes dashed in 4-3 loss to the New Jersey Titans

The Maryland Black Bears’ playoff hopes were dashed Friday night, as the New Jersey Titans came to town and squeaked out a 4-3 win. The loss for Maryland was its eleventh in its last twelve games, while New Jersey snapped a three game losing streak.

Titans’ defender Brody Medeiros got things started with New Jersey’s first of three power play goals. Medeiros received a pass from Shane Haviland and let a slap shot go from the point that made it 1-0. Luke Mountain responded for the Black Bears, tipping Bobby Batten’s shot on the power play to make it 1-1. Then just 15 seconds later, Kyle Jeffers regained the lead for the Titans with a shot all alone in front of Maryland goalie Anthony Del Tufo to make it 2-1.

Shane Haviland recorded New Jersey’s second power play goal on a slap shot to make it 3-1 in the second period. Later in the frame, Jonathan Young tipped a shot from the point by Titan’s goalie Brandon Perrone to make it 3-2.

Brody Medeiros scored his second goal of the game on the power play, once again with a slap shot from the point to make it 4-2 Titans. The Black Bears clawed back to within a goal, after a great individual effort by Marek Wazny to make it 4-3. Wazny took the puck from New Jersey’s Matteo Menotti and took it from one end to the other, and chipping the puck over Perrone for the goal. The Titans held on to the 4-3 lead for the win. Anthony Del Tufo made 34 saves in the loss while Brandon Perrone stopped 12 shots in the win.

Maryland takes the ice for one last time at Piney Orchard Ice Arena against the New Jersey Titans on Saturday, March 16th. Puck drop is at 7:45 PM ET for the final home game of the season.
