MDOT’s SHA preparing for tomorrow’s snow

| February 19, 2019, 05:16 PM

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is preparing in advance of a winter storm forecast to produce accumulating snow tomorrow throughout much of the State.  As the storm transitions from snow to sleet and rain, there is a significant chance for icy conditions along the I-95 corridor and in the north and west portions of the State. Crews have pretreated roads with salt brine and are readying equipment and supplies, poised to begin active operations early tomorrow morning.

“Extremely heavy snow is expected to impact much of the state tomorrow, and we urge Marylanders to start preparing now,” Governor Larry Hogan said. “Our crews will be treating the roads around the clock, but it is critical for our citizens to use good judgement and avoid travel if possible.”

The current forecast is predicting bursts of extremely heavy snowfall early Wednesday, beginning during the morning rush hour. The rate of snowfall will be double the rate of the ability of the plows to clear, which will result in snow-covered roadways. Heavy snowfall will reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.  Motorists are urged to make smart travel decisions and, if possible, to curtail driving until the storm passes.

Since the storm is projected to produce six or more inches of snow, MDOT SHA makes available certain park and rides for truckers to ride out the storm. These lots have adequate turning radii for truckers to maneuver. Truckers can locate park and rides for shelter by clicking here. Additionally, MDOT SHA will deploy heavy-duty wreckers at strategic locations in case they become disabled on steep grades.

Motorists who must travel are urged to plan plenty of additional drive time and use MDOT SHA’s STORM web application to locate where MDOT SHA and contractor vehicles have treated roads.  Before setting out, drivers are urged to clean vehicles completely.  Additionally drivers are reminded to never pass snow plows.

Motorists are urged to monitor the forecast as conditions can change throughout the day and visit md511.maryland.gov for real-time travel alerts and conditions. Customers may also follow MDOT SHA on Twitter @MDSHA and “like” them on Facebook.

Residents can also follow Anne Arundel County plows in real time.
