Gambrills crash claims life of local woman

On February 4, 2019 at approximately 1:19 pm, officers responded to the intersection of Crain Highway (MD-3) and Annapolis Road (MD-175) in Gambrills for a crash involving a commercial tractor trailer and a sport utility vehicle.
A Freightliner tractor trailer, operated by Tremaine Johnson of North Carolina, was going southbound on Crain Highway. A Honda, operated by Mary Grillo of Gambrills, was going eastbound on Annapolis Road. The Honda appears to have entered the intersection while facing a red traffic signal. The Freightliner struck the Honda in the intersection. The driver of the Freightliner was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead on the scene.
The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be the Honda driver’s failure to yield intersection right of way while facing a steady red traffic signal. There is no indication of excessive speed or alcohol use at this time. The Traffic Safety Section is handling the investigation and the case will be reviewed by the State’s Attorney.
