Students at the Center of Applied Technology – North who study HVAC operation and repair will soon have an opportunity to learn on a state-of-the-art Variable Refrigerant Flow System thanks to a generous donation from TRANE.

Company and school officials announced the donation to students last week. The $24,000 equipment system, which features indoor and outdoor units, refrigerant cooling and a branch circuit controller, will be installed in the coming weeks. CAT-North students will take part in the installation by pouring the equipment pad, building refrigerant piping, and making electrical connections.

“We have been so fortunate over the years to have great partnerships with industry professionals, and this donation by TRANE offers an incredible array of opportunities for our students,” CAT-North Principal Dan Schaffhauser said. “This will give our HVAC students a leg up on students at virtually any other school.”

As part of its ongoing educational commitment, Trane will offer technicians to coach students as they learn the system. Students will work on the system and mimic a real-world problem to diagnose and solve issues that they will encounter on the job.

“At the end of the day, we are partners in the school district and it is about the kids,” said Maryland TRANE Account Manager Andrew Garay. “This partnership is an opportunity to open some eyes a little wider. For them to have the ability to get a glimpse of the real world and spend so much time with people in the industry—that is the most exciting part.”

TRANE has been in business for more than 100 years and is a leader in the HVAC industry.
