Black Bears announce Military Appreciation Night on February 23rd

The Maryland Black Bears formally announced that their February 23rd home game against the Johnstown Tomahawks will be “Military Appreciation Night,” a hockey night that will honor the brave men and women that dedicate their lives to protecting our nation. The Black Bears will donate a portion of the tickets sales from the game and half of the proceeds from the night’s Chuck-A-Puck throwing to the Fort Meade Alliance. The Fort Meade Alliance is a private community organization which strives to support the work and people of Fort George G. Meade, and help Fort Meade drive economic growth in Maryland. There will also be an entire section in the Piney Orchard Ice Arena dedicated to Fort Meade service members.

Col. Erich Spragg, Fort Meade garrison commander, will be making the ceremonial puck drop before the start of the game, the National Anthem will be performed by Spec. Tenekeyia McGaskey, and the color guard will be made up of the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade Color Guard.

“We are thrilled about the opportunity to honor and thank our local heroes in the Fort Meade Community,” said Maryland Black Bears President Robyn Remick. “This community is made up of courageous individuals that are selflessly supported by families and friends and the Black Bears are very fortunate to have them as our neighbor. Military Appreciation Night will be a special tribute to all they do for this country and the Central Maryland Community.”

“We look forward to participating in Military Appreciation Night with our new neighbors,” said Col. Erich Spragg, Fort Meade garrison commander. “Events like this strengthen our bond as a community and enhance the quality of life for our service members and families. We are excited to have a hometown hockey team here in Odenton and look forward to watching the Black Bears on the ice.”

The Guardians, the hockey club for Joint Base Andrews, will participate in a Black Bear Style NHL Hockey Skills Competition during the first intermission. The second intermission will include eight service members from Fort Meade competing in one of the classic Maryland Black Bear intermission activities.

Navy Federal Credit Union and T-Shirt Guy’s Print Shop will be sponsors for the Maryland Black Bears Military Appreciation Night.
