Annapolis City Attorney Richard H. Melnick announced his resignation to Mayor Gavin Buckley and the Office of Law staff on Thursday, February 21, 2019. Melnick has enjoyed a positive relationship with both the Mayor and members of the City Council throughout his tenure as City Attorney.
Melnick has worked as City Attorney since February of 2018. He is leaving the position to be closer to his home and family and pursue projects in private practice.
“Richard has diligently led the Office of Law,” said Mayor Buckley. “I am disappointed to see him go after working closely together on a variety of projects. I know City officials and employees considered him a steady and trusted advisor.”
Melnick said that some of his proudest accomplishments included drafting a new City procurement law, coordinating and revamping risk management processes, promoting economic development initiatives, leading litigation efforts, establishing and overseeing processes for legislation, providing a legal framework for collecting taxes from short-term rentals and internet-brokered facilities, advising the City on environmental and zoning matters, advocating for public safety and community relationships and managing the Office of Law’s personnel and budget.
“Unexpected family health needs have arisen that require me to be more available to my family,” Melnick said. “Accordingly, it is with sadness that I have submitted my letter of resignation. I’ve enjoyed working with Mayor Buckley and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to serve the City and the residents of Annapolis.”
Melnick’s last day with the City will be March 8, 2019. An acting City attorney will serve until a permanent replacement is named.
