Diaz, Gonzalez fuel Baysox win

BaysoxYusniel Diaz homered early and Brian Gonzalez worked six strong innings as the Baysox upended Richmond 6-2 on Monday night at The Diamond.
The big inning distanced Bowie from the Squirrels right out of the gate. Ryan McKenna singled to center to leadoff the game. He went first to third on a base hit to right by Steve Wilkerson and a sac-fly followed by Corban Joseph to put Bowie on top 1-0. Ryan Mountcastle singled and with two on and one down Diaz did it again. He lifted a three-run home run down the line in right field – his second in as many days – and the Baysox had a 4-0 lead five batters in.

That put the ball in Brian Gonzalez’s court. He got into trouble but worked through a bases loaded first inning jam to get through six strong innings en route to a fourth win in his last five starts. Richmond threatened at times but could not break open a big inning. The Squirrels went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the series opener.
Corban Joseph had a big night with three hits and three runs driven in during the victory. Orioles rehabbing utility man Steve Wilkerson got a hit to all fields in the win – singling to right and center along with a double down the left field line. Matt Grimes worked two scoreless innings and Zach Pop got a double play ball to dance out of a jam in the ninth closing the game out.
